Cleaning up coarse enlargements

An image turned coarse after enlargement

Digital images will always become coarser when they are enlarged. This cannot be corrected merely by adjusting the resolution. Image interpolation is one method of solving the problem. This is a means of making adjustments by smoothing the color tones between pixels.

In Adobe Photoshop, interpolation is performed automatically when you enlarge an image, using one of three methods: Bicubic, Nearest Neighbor, or Bilinear. The Bicubic method yields the highest quality. To specify the default interpolation method, choose Preferences from the File menu and click General. In the dialog box, select "Bicubic (Better)" from the Interpolation options.
